Hashtags are a way of adding tags or categories to tweets on Twitter, by prefacing a tag with the hash (#) symbol. It enables one to search for tweets about specific subjects.
You may have seen Facebook statuses have a word that starts with a hash (#). These statuses are tweets that have been pushed to Facebook.
For a hashtag to be useful, it needs to be used by multiple people. The creation of a hashtag dictionary describes an agreed set of hashtags to use, to increase the likelihood of those tags being used. You can search for recent usage of a hashtag on hashtags.org
